RESEARCH INTERESTS | Major research areas are metallurgy and solid mechanics, with emphasis on radiation effects and ion implantation. Present interests include: radioisotope power sources for MEMS devices, finite element simulation of hardness tests, experimental determination of the hardness of ion-implanted materials using nanoindentation, calculation of neutron fluence to nuclear reactor pressure vessels for managing embrittlement and residual life, and finite element calculations of temperature and stress fields in conceptual fusion reactors.
TEACHING INTERESTS | Professor Blanchard has taught numerous courses, including sophomore, junior, and graduate level computing courses; nuclear materials, radiation damage, mechanics of materials, nuclear physics, and a freshman-level introduction to engineering course. He teaches several courses via distance education, using a combination of videotape, narrated electronic lectures (produced using Camtasia), asynchronous discussions, and web-conferencing.
